Hurlers fall to Cushendun

12 June 2012
The senior hurlers suffered their second defeat of the season going down 1-17 to 0-6 in Cushendun at the weekend. The whole club made a significant effort to support the team in this difficult fixture and it was a credit to Naomh Una to see some many club polo shirts around the perimeter of the ground.

Declan McLarnon got the visitors off to the perfect start with a fine score from play, and had the Aggies been able to find their range in the opening ten minutes, the result could well have been very different. Kevin Grieve, Conor McLean, Aidan McKinley and Chris McKee all saw fine efforts drift just wide before Cushendun began to feel their way into the game. The home side responded with the outstanding free-taking of their number 10 who was dropping the ball over from all sorts of angles.

Aggies frustration was compounded in the first half when Conor McLean was adjudged to have entered the small square before a Chris McKee free landed. Had the referee been closer he would have clearly seen that McLean didn't enter the square at all, but nevertheless, a great Aggies goal chance was taken away. It was the Aggies who finished the half the strongest and frees from Kevin Grieve and Chris McKee sent them in four behind at the break 0-9 to 0-5.

In the second half is was Cushendun who turned the screw, landing a string of unanswered points and quickly putting the game beyond the Aggies reach. The Aggies finally settled in the last ten minutes and got a point for their efforts. The referee was once again the centre of attention, awarding the hosts a late penalty when, despite allowing the Cushendun attacker the advantage, he then called play back to award the free. Cushendun made no waste of their good fortune, smashing the ball to the back of the net to run out 1-17 to 0-6 winners.
